Resting in the Shade
24x18 Acrylic on panel
September in the mountains: warm in the sun, perfect in the shade. We're following the winding banks of a mountain stream, reveling in the moment. A bit of shade and a generous rock gives us a place to rest and watch the water flow by. Silver Creek, St. Mary’s, CO.
This painting is currently at Spirits in the Wind Gallery, Golden CO.

Hiking Up to St. Mary's Glacier
24x18 acrylic on panel
I'm hiking up to St. Mary's Glacier Lake with the whole family in tow. We're taking the back route following the creek up the mountain. The afternoon sun slides over the mountains causing deep shadows next to the brightly lit grass. The kids climb rocks and play with the dog while I try to savor the moment. (Idaho Springs)
Reflected Sky
24x18 Acrylic on Panel
Framed
The mountain creek widens for a moment just west of the Tarryall Reservoir. This particular afternoon, the brilliant blue of the sky was matched color for color in the reflections on the water—only broken be a few stones in the distance.
Canyon
36"x24" Acrylic on canvas.
Original painting framed with 4" dark gray frame.
This view is from the floor of a canyon looking up at the sky--hinting at the green trees on the hillside above. The strong sunlight catches several ledges on the way down before pooling on the canyon floor. A small waterfall glimmers in the background.
Here Comes the Sun
24x18 Acrylic on Panel
Framed
Sitting on a rock next to South Boulder Creek, I listen as the canyon greets the morning sun. The birds begin singing. Ground squirrels chase each other through the brush. Eldorado Canyon
Surrounded by Color - Small
14x11 Acrylic on Panel
One of the iconic views of Golden--looking West from the bridge on Washington. Even after years of painting it, this view doesn't get old.
Orphaned Thought Find Voice
24x18 Acrylic on Panel
The sun paints the rock faces with soft oranges. To borrow the words of Annie Dillard, "It is impossible to tear oneself away from this spectacle": Eldorado Canyon
Morning Vigil
14x11 Acrylic on panel
Cradling my morning coffee in my hands, I sit by the mountain stream watching the sun slowly paint the rock face orange and red. Hay creek, near the Twin Eagles trailhead.

Spring Runoff Below the Falls
14x11 Acrylic on panel
South Boulder Creek is normally a quiet bit of water with a waterfall here and there. With the snowmelt, the sleepy stream becomes a torrent. The water is cold; really cold. It's 90 degrees by my house and over 30 degrees cooler next to the water. I could have used a sweater.
Michigan Creek
24x18 Acrylic on canvas
Go past Kenosha Pass and turn left at Jefferson. As you follow Tarryall road the creek meanders next to you--splitting and joining. I walked along the roadside to stretch my legs. I could have stood there all day.
Lefthand Trail in Bloom
14x11 Acrylic on Panel
The yellow sweet clover and white ground plum are in bloom. This morning, they coated the hills in color!
Crossing the Stream
24"x18"x1.5" Acrylic on cradled panel
Gallery style, sides 1.5 inches deep with sides painted black.
Hiking the Belcher Hill trail in White Ranch Park, Golden CO. For about 1/2 mile you hike next to the stream but never quite get a good look at it. Then, after a quick turn, you descend to the stream banks into the cool shade of the trees. It's a small bit of oasis from the full sun on the trail.
Early Spring on South Boulder Creek
14x11 acrylic on panel
It's still stick season in Colorado. That means some shorthand for the tangle of branches along the riverbank. Other than some minor edits, I decided to not give it a face lift in the studio. It's an honest representation of the feel for the place. Near the bobolink trailhead.
Beneath Cobalt Skies
14x11 Acrylic on panel
The mountain creek widens for a moment just west of the Tarryall Reservoir. This particular afternoon, the brilliant blue of the sky was matched color for color in the reflections on the water—only broken be a few stones in the distance.
Early Color - Vertical

Small clumps of aspen get a head start on their fall colors. Davis Ponds Loop, Staunton State Park.
Boulder Civic Area
14x11 acrylic on panel
A bit of painting at the City of Boulder Civic Area right by the library. It was a beautiful February day--a bit windy though. The painting tried to run away on me... twice. I think my trusty pochade box is going to make it. The umbrella? That remains to be seen.
Facing East from the Bridge
14x11 Acrylic on Panel
Eldorado Canyon is one of my favorite places in Colorado. I'm standing on the bridge near the visitors center. The wind is a bit too much for my umbrella and I have to take it down. A steady stream of hikers and families with small children stopped by to chat.
Spring Snow
14"x11" Acrylic on canvas
Original painting framed with 3" dark gray frame.
A spring storm dropped piles of heavy snow along the Front Range. We went outside in the middle of the storm to shake off the trees in the hopes of saving them. I could barely make out the spring colors through the gusts of snow. It was beautiful.
Majestic View at Lake's Edge
18x24 Acrylic on Panel
The small lake catches the colors of the trees on the far bank. The mountains stand dark agains the cerulean sky. This particular piece sat in the studio corner for a month. I had a helpful critique session with my dog yesterday and made some good progress on it.
Dry Creek
24"x36"x1.5" Acrylic on cradled panel
Gallery style, sides 1.5 inches deep with sides painted black.
On a brisk fall morning our family went for a hike in Golden Gate Canyon State Park. On the way home we found a dry creek bed for our picnic spot. After lunch, we explored as far as the thistles and brambles would allow.
Serpents Trail Gulch
36"x24" Acrylic on cradled panel
Pinyon juniper dot the landscape. The big sagebrush scattered through the hillside felt more blue than green today: Serpents Trail, Colorado National Monument
Fallen Tree
16"X20" Acrylic on Canvas
Framed
I walk this trail every month of the year. If you're willing to trek a bit into the grasses, you're rewarded with a splendid view of creek finding its way into an opening in the trees: Ralston Creek Trail.
Three Horizons, Moab
18"x24" Acrylic on canvas

The skyline west of the Rockies is like nowhere else in this country. Pillars of red stone stand scattered through the land. The Rockies tower blue above them. My children groan as I get out of the car for yet another picture.

San Jose del Cabo
11x14 Acrylic on panel
Original painting framed with 3" dark gray frame.
Living in Colorado, the beauty of the ocean is something I don’t experience very often. It’s a different type of sublime than the mountains. This is a plein air (on location) painting on the beach in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.
Colors in the Grass
Walking the Davis Ponds Loop trail, I round a bend and notice the oranges in the grass. The sparse Aspens haven't yet started to turn. Staunton State Park.
Oak Creek
24"x36" Acrylic on Canvas
Original painting framed with 2.5" dark gray frame.
While on a family vacation in Sedona, we escaped the heat of the day by swimming in the nearby river. My children played in the water while I sketched the reflections of the sun and the trees.

On the western slope of Colorado, the landscape begins to look a bit more like Moab. The hanging canyons of Colorado National Monument are stunning.

Chautauqua Trail - Sold
11x14 Acrylic on panel
I sometimes forget how beautiful Boulder can be. Today, I went hiking in Chautauqua park. I didn't get very far up the trail before deciding to paint. With all the rain this year, the colors were on full display.

September Sun
11x14 Oil on cradled panel
Original painting framed with 3" dark gray frame.
I found this little spot near Jefferson, CO. September is my favorite month. It’s the last breath of summer and the first hint of chill in the air.
Quiet Pond
18"x24" Acrylic, paper mounted on canvas
Original painting framed with 3" dark gray frame.
Tucked back in the Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge, the sun reflects red off the water onto the clay in the riverbank. The result is a lovely red that’s picked up here and there in the surrounding scene.
Colorado Meadow
18x24 Acrylic on panel
Coming down the mountain, I approach a small meadow. In the distance, the land flattens out. With the angle of the sun, it looks as though the land miles away is a strange extension of the hillside to my left: either the northeast part of Park or the southwestern part of Jefferson county.
Chatfield State Park
11x14 acrylic on panel
The Plein Air Artists of Colorado gathered near the south end of Chatfield State Park. It was a magical morning: the sun turned the fresh snow on the Front Range yellows and oranges. And I got to spend the day with some pretty neat folks!
Flatirons on an Overcast Morning
11x14 Acrylic on Panel
Just a quick hike from NCAR I set up my easel in the long grass. The dog chases grasshoppers while I chase the sparse light. Boulder, CO
Nature's Embrace
11x14 Acrylic on Panel
Painted in June next to the South Boulder Creek. Standing next to the water was so cold I had to go back to the car to find something to keep warm. I painted with a picnic blanked wrapped around myself.
Spring on Clear Creek
11x14 Oil on panel.
The Spring rains and snow melt bring new life to the creek after a long winter. The waters are high and the trees are starting to leaf. Painted on location from the Washington Ave bridge, Golden CO

Colorado Wildflowers
18"x24" Acrylic on Canvas
Original painting framed with 3" dark gray frame.
Years back, our local community garden planted a pollinator garden full of Black-Eyed Susans, Queen Anne's lace, and coneflowers. Eventually, the flowers spread past their confines, slowly making their way into the adjacent grasslands. I grin every time I walk by it--beauty invading the mundane.
Spring Beach
11x14 Oil on panel
Living in Colorado, the beauty of the ocean is something I don’t experience very often. It’s a different type of sublime than the mountains. This is a plein air (on location) painting on the beach in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.
Mayhem Gulch
11"x14" Acrylic on cradled panel
Original painting framed with 3" dark gray frame.
Spring is in full swing in the canyon. The snow is gone from the mountainside. It stubbornly clings to the sides of the river in perpetual shade. The winter colors are giving over to the bright greens of new life.

Lake Hattie
8"x10" Acrylic on canvas

My sister owns property in Wyoming. We often take walks through the fields, watching the light play across the surface of the water.
Moab
16"x20" Acrylic on Canvas

The skyline west of the Rockies is like nowhere else in this country. Pillars of red stone stand scattered through the land. The Rockies tower blue above them. My children groan as I get out of the car for yet another picture.
